There aren't many best places to visit in Guatemala where you can cook marshmallows on a volcano's clifftops, swim through crystal water, explore historical ruins and hike through a lush rainforest in one trip. Guatemala is a perfect place for nature enthusiasts, however Guatemala also houses an exceptional Mayan culture and several interesting cities. However, here is a list of the 30 best places to visit and tourist attractions in Guatemala.

1. Antigua Guatemala

A short drive west of Guatemala City, the area is easy to get by taxi or bus if necessary. Antigua is a former capital of Antigua. In 1773 the city was severely devastated when several earthquake events took place. Several people left because of the accident. This journey can sometimes be challenging, but it is definitely worth the effort to swim and relax in the peaceful nature. The pool is relatively isolated and most tourists choose Lanqan - a town about 40 minutes driving from Semuc Champey. There are amenities and a few good hostels for guests. Zephyr Lodge is a popular party hostel that offers infinity pools with breathtaking views of mountain landscapes.

Itzá means bjorjo de gua; its name means water witches or bjorja. The beautiful lake is often visited due to the Flore islands that is a jumping off point for Tikal but the guides and transportation have plenty for you to discover on this lake! You have the option of kayaking, swimming and even sailing in search and rescue!

Play A Chechenal is an attractive beach near Flores known for wooden docks, white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and white sands.. El Remate is a favorite spot for me. This is an easy to get around small town on the eastern lake side. Its surface water is cleaner and makes for great swimming and fishing places.

You want a little relaxing and sun at Guatemalan country of Monterrey, an untouched coastline beach. Although Guatemala has little known of its beaches, Monterrico remains a hidden gem two hours away from Guatemala City. The black sand is a distance from your eyes and its crashing water offers the perfect surfing conditions.

Speaking of Surfing, it is important that we mention another smaller village called Paredon. More north of Monterrico it's more known for its beaches and not many surf schools or hostels are set up. There will be surf, sun and seafood but there is no other option.

25. Quetzaltenango (Xela) – One of Guatemala's funniest and authentic cities!

Although the smallest of the three major cities in Guatemala, Quetzaltenango felt somewhat smaller compared to the pollution-ridden capital. Quetzaltenango lies atop the Sierra Madres Mountains which makes for an ideal location to experience authentic Guatemala.

Here you'll find Guatemalan cooking, energetic locals, street shows. Xela is very vibrant and much cheaper than the cities of the south (the capital and Antigua). Many backpackers come here for several weeks to learn Spanish. The best aspect of Xella, however, can't even exist in Xela itself.

26. Acatenango Volcano – One of the best volcano hikes in Central America!

The trek from the summit of Volcano Acatenango is one of the hardest hikings in Guatemala due to sheer steepness of the volcano. It is nevertheless an extremely popular mountain to hike due to its amazing view of nearby volcanoes.

The volcano Fuego explodes once per minute, absolute crazy. The steep hikes are definitely worth the trip to the Volcano Fuego. Some tours can go up to Fuego but not with all the risks. The huge eruption that took place last month in Indonesia killed thousands more people.

Lake Atitlan no longer exists. It is a destination for backpackers from the 70s and remains an important tourist destination. It's a place that I really enjoy visiting in Guatemala. Lake Atitlan is a cobalt blue lake in a rocky volcano.

There is an absolutely incredible panorama that can take you anywhere and you've got lots of wonderful experiences to enjoy in the lake including sunrise hikes, kayaking in Lake Eady. Various cities surround Lake Stream and all have different atmospheres.

The Tikal National Park has largely forests and vegetation and under the jungle floor is a concrete floor. The theories suggest the Maya abandoned Tikal as their monstrous city was lacking in natural resources.
